Samuel Wurzelbacher, who is notoriously known as 'Joe The Plumber', but is not actually a plumber, is running for Congress and has just put out this ridiculous ad.Wurzelbacher has a platform of typical Tea Party regressive reforms, including rolling back gun control. The ad makes the historically inaccurate and insulting claim that the Jewish and Armenian genocides were the result of gun control. If that wasn't bad enough, he also blames American slavery on gun control. After this was all covered by Hunter Walker of the New York Observer many angry readers wrote in and complained. This is his laughable response:
Joe is a student of history. He knows that the founders read John Locke and they understood that the 2nd Amendment was always the people’s last defense against tyrannical government. They always use gun control before abusing the rights of people, so, yeah, that’s our position and that’s what was said in the video. And there’s nothing offensive about it, it’s just historical fact. The National Jewish Democratic Council has demanded an apology from Mr.Wurzelbacher. This is what they have to say:
Using the memories of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust to make a political point is never appropriate, under any circumstances. For Ohio Republican House candidate Samuel Wurzelbacher to imply that these innocent lives were taken because of gun control laws is simply beyond the pale. Wurzelbacher—who is just the latest in a long line of Republicans who seem to think it is acceptable to use the Holocaust for political gain—must apologize and remove this offensive video immediately.Rabbi Alan Sokobin, rabbi emeritus at The Temple-Congregation Shomer Emunim in Sylvania, dismissed the video's message.
A plumber's shotgun would not have saved the millions of Armenians against the juggernaut of Turkish forces. A plumber's shotgun would not have saved one Jew against the mechanized heavy armaments of the Nazi regime. A plumber's shotgun is only a plumber's shotgun. The very notion that gun control would have saved the Jews, Armenians, or Africans from prosecution is laughable. It would take far more than a few handguns to stand up to a well trained and armed legion of trained soldiers. In the African's case, they came from a land without many if any guns, control or not. Often times slaves would revolt or try to run away but there was a whole system to stop them and to punish them afterwards. Gun control was not their problem, the fact that slavery was enshrined into the law was.
Mr. Wurzelbacher is the second person to challenge Progressive Democrat Marcy Kaptur in her newly redraw district who has been in the national spotlight because of the Holocaust. Rich Iott, whose attempt to unseat Miss Kaptur in the last congressional election failed spectacularly when pictures emerged of him wearing a Nazi uniform in a World War II re-enactment.
