There is nothing honorable about hate and intolerance. Pastor Terry Jones of the 50 member Orwellian named 'Dove World Outreach Center', made famous for his Quran burnings and his Dearborn MI Mosque protests is now up to some new / old tricks. This time he is using a tried and true racist symbol of a 'lynching' to make a statement against 'Gay Marriage'.
In the last decades of the nineteenth century, the lynching of Black people in the Southern and Border States became an institutionalized method used by Whites to terrorize Blacks and maintain White Supremacy. In the South, during the period 1880 to 1940, there was deep-seated and all-pervading hatred and fear of the Negro which led White Mobs to turn to lynch law as a means of social control.
Although rape is often cited as a rationale, statistics now show that only about 25% of lynchings from 1880 to 1940 were prompted by an accusation of rape. Most victims of lynching however were political activists, labor organizers or black men and women who violated white expectations of black deference, and were deemed "uppity" or "insolent." Though most victims were black men, women were by no means exempt.
Openly lynching individuals suspected of any trumped up crimes, and carried out more or less spontaneously by a mob, was a shameful Southern pastime whose time thankfully has past. Pastor Terry Jones now re-embraces it. For this so-called 'Pastor', Terry Jones, to do this is an outrage that should anger even regressive conservatives, but probably won't. Jones will of course just claim it is about Free Speech and Gay Marriage, and has nothing to do with the racist lynch mob imagery. Americans should know better.
