Whoops Did We Say That in Public?

Texas Republican Party now in the awkward position of saying they weren't thinking when they said the hate people that think for themselves.
Texas GOP

UPDATE: The Texas Republican Party is now trying to back track on their stand against thinking. This is the official excuse from Republican Party of Texas (RPT) Communications Director Chris Elam:
The chairman of the Education Subcommittee indicated that it was an oversight of the committee, that the plank should not have included ‘critical thinking skills’ after ‘values clarification. And it was not the intent of the subcommittee to present a plank that would have indicated that the RPT in any way opposed the development of critical thinking skills.
Make no mistake about it, this IS what they think. The only mistake they made was actually putting out there on the Internet. Apparently they still haven't quite caught on to that one yet. This is really made obvious in their hatred for Mediamatters and sites like the Huffington Post or the Daily Koz. They were counting on only other regressives seeing it, and the fact most seniors [their strongest demographic] don't use the Internet much.

Fox News Makes the Case Against Health Care Jobs

On the Young Turks, they showed a video clip from a Fox News panel show with a cadre of their Regressive Republican Doctor Personalities [think Doctor Oz x Rush Limbaugh]. On the show they claim 'ObamaCare' will create a shortage of Doctors. They go on to frame this as a bad thing. Normally if a government program created a huge demand in employment for professionals that would be cause for celebration. They claim by the year 2025 160,000 more doctors will be needed. For every doctor there is about on average 10 support staff [nurses, aids, clerical, therapy, etc]. Lets take their claim on face value and do the math...

160,000 Doctors x 10 Support Staff per Doctor = 1,760,000+ New Jobs
Only the Regressive Right echo chamber would spin this in a negative light. The 1.76 million new jobs doesn't take into account all the other related and spin off jobs that would be required to educate all these new doctors and health care professionals.

What is Fox News worried about? Poor people might actually get healthcare instead of dying in the street. Again this seems bizarre to anybody with an once of moral fiber, but not Fox News and the Regressive Right. Fox would rather try to scare people into believing that you won't be able to get medical care because some poor parasite is now hogging up all your doctors time.

Another laughable claim they make on why your Doctor won't have time for you is because the government will now be telling doctors what to do. Anybody with insurance in America who has ever been sick knows what a ridiculous statement this is. Why? Because insurance companies are already very aggressively doing this.

It is quite common these days for a doctor to prescribe for example a blood pressure drug, and then the insurance company will say 'Sorry we will only pay for the drug that came out 40 years ago, the new drug is too expensive'. Healthcare reform actually puts a limit on a lot of this rather than imposing more of it. The insurance companies make more profit by denying care, but ObamaCare says in many places 'Not so fast slick, give that guy his blood pressure pills'. That is a big part of why they are fighting it.

Local News Now From 10,000 Miles Away

The Tribune Company, publishers of such respected papers as the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times has announced that it has made a strategic investment in Journatic, a Philippinian outsourcer of local content to media companies and advertisers, and that the two companies will have a significant operating relationship going forward.

Millions of American workers have been put out of work as employers have followed Mitt Romney's advice and moved operations overseas. First it was manufacturing, next data processing and customer service. Now it’s local news turn...

That's right Media baron Sam Zell’s Tribune Company has begun to send local reporting jobs overseas to companies like Jounatic. Are you really going to trust local news from somebody 10,000 miles away that can barely speak English let alone know the ins and outs of local politics? Do you want original local investigative reporting? Lets be clear about this, Journatic is not in the same league as Associated Press or Reuters by a long shot. If all you need is fluff pieces based off press releases then maybe you are alright. However if you want actual journalism, the kind the founders were talking about when they said 'Freedom of the Press shall not be abridged' ... you just got screwed.

“We’re excited to partner with Journatic, both as an investor and as a customer,” said Dan Kazan, Tribune’s Senior Vice President of Investments. “Journatic will expand Tribune’s ability to deliver relevant hyperlocal content to our readers, and we believe that many other publishers and advertisers will benefit from its services as well.”

Translation: We just fired a bunch of Americans and replaced them with a content harvesting algorithm and  slave-wage Filipino's. Remember Zell is one of the so-called 'Job Creators' people like Mitt Romney and Fox News keep talking about. Problem is they forget to mention [on purpose] that those jobs are NOT in America. Sure they might create a few jobs guarding their money on Wall Street, but in net it is another massive loss of American jobs.

To make the process easier Zell's company recently filed for Ch 11 Bankruptcy in order to it more easy shed union workers [and their pensions] in favor of Filipino workers who make two dollars a story with no benefits. Unfortunately this is just the tip of iceberg. According to a major story by This American Life, dozens of papers around the country have already outsourced local news production to Journatic.

What is a Regressive?

The Official Motto of the Republican Party and Mitt Romney's Presidential Logo for 2012.

  • Becoming less advanced; returning to a former or less developed state.
  • Of, relating to, or marked by political regression, that prefers the archaic and ignorance over advancement and knowledge.

Retrograde - Religious Fundamentalist - Republican - Conservative - Tea Party - Backward

More Proof Regressives are Turning America into the Taliban

The EU is currently running a campaign to get more women into science. To do that they put together a rather nice website aimed at today's youth including snazzy YouTube videos, screensavers, a cool song, and a Facebook page. They give this reason why girls will love science...
You can really improve people’s lives? Getting involved in science means making a “world of difference”. If you want to prevent the spread of disease, improve the quality of life for people, protect the fragile natural environment, put food into people’s hands and combat poverty, then science is for you.
and this...
Science is exciting. Want to learn to understand how animals communicate? Study the planets? How about getting into the social media field? Will today be the day you get the answers to the questions you’ve been asking? Science is fun and exciting – wake up curious.
Well what does this have to do with Republican Regressives turning America into some kind of throwback to medieval Europe or the present day Taliban? We offer it merely as a contrast, a clear black and white case study of what to do and what not to do if you want your society to progress.

This is from the official platform of the Republican Party of Texas for 2012. I posted it as a picture just to verify that I am not making this up or exaggerating in any way.

Of, relating to, or marked by political regression, that prefers archaic an ignorant methods over advancement and knowledge.
From page 13 of Republican Party Platform pdf

First up, controversial theories. What are these so called controversial theories? Evolution and human caused Global Warming. Let me start by saying these are NOT controversial theories among the scientists. No far far far from it, they are in fact virtually unanimously accepted as fact.

The science behind Global Warming was not from some radical environmentalist group, but was in fact from the US Air Force. Right after World War 2, the Air Force was looking at ways to shoot down enemy air craft. So they started work on heat seeking missiles. In the process what the Air Force and defense contractors discovered was that water vapor and C02 block heat emissions in certain wave lengths. So essentially the very jet exhaust you were trying to track could defeat a heat seeking missiles censors, making it useless. It is around this time that they put 2 and 2 together and realized that if C02 can block heat emissions from a jet engine, that on a larger scale it could block heat from the sun escaping back into space. Since that time thousands of studies, millions of man hours, and billions of dollars have been spent studying this further in every imaginable way. The evidence is irrefutable and persuasive. If there is any uncertainty, it is how fast the earth will warm and just what other changes it bring with it, but the science that man-made Global Warming is already happening is rock solid clear.

Why are the Regressive Republicans so dead set against this? At it's root, because they get a lot of money from the fossil fuel industries. It would mean the fossil industry would now have to accept some of the costs it externalized onto society rather than pay itself. Thus the true costs of oil, gas, and coal would be more apparent to the public. Then the Regressives Republicans would have to admit they are hard core Reverse Robin Hood Socialists.

The main justification for our bloated military is to protect the oil industry, but it is spun to the public as 'Protecting Freedom'. If America converted more to alternative energy sources it would be politically harder to justify spending more on defense than every other country in the world put together. Thus we have 2 very powerful and wealthy industries that control the Regressive Republican party and have it in their financial interest to stop this research and hide / distort the facts.

Evolution is the basis for all modern biological sciences and is as proven as gravity. Yet it is not just the idea of evolving from lower ape like creatures that bothers the Regressive Republicans so much, it everything else that proves it. According to Young Earth Creationists, the bible would give the age of the universe at around 6,000 years old. This means that counting sedimentary layers on side of the Grand Canyon is a questionable science to them. It means means the discovery of an 9,550 year old pine tree in Sweden is questionable science. It would mean the speed of light is questionable science, because stars couldn't possibly be billions of light years away if the biblical accounts were true.

How do we know how old the Universe is? By measuring the the number of light years from the most distant object we can see.
Brewster Rockit: Space Guy breaks it down for Regressive Republican Timmy

When you get right down to it, there isn't an aspect of modern life that in some way doesn't depend on what the Regressive Republicans now call questionable science. From GPS to the Internet to a Flue shot, none of these wonders of science would work if the Regressive Republicans were correct about so-called 'questionable science'.

All these different fields provide little pieces of the puzzle that prove in one way or another that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, not 6,000. An old earth disproves the bibles creation story, and thus shows that evolution did have time to happen. So any idea that Jesus had a pet Tyrannosaurus rex is preposterous. But you don't need to go back billions of years to prove evolution correct, you merely need to read the headlines.  We hear all the time from the medical community about this or that illness becoming penicillin resistant. That could only happen if evolutionary theory was correct. The common refrain from Regressive Republicans is that is just 'micro-evolution'. Sorry but evolution is evolution, there is no such theory or evidence that it only works on germs and not everything else.

Next up early Childhood development. The Regressive Republicans are against what? That's right Kindergarten and Preschool. The first publicly financed kindergarten in the United States was established in St. Louis in 1873 by Susan Blow. Elizabeth Harrison, who wrote extensively about the theory of early childhood education and worked to upgrade educational standards for kindergarten teachers by establishing  the National College of Education in 1886. The main purpose of  kindergarten is teach children how to communicate, play, and interact with others appropriately. A kindergarten teacher traditionally provides various materials and activities to motivate these children to learn the language and vocabulary of reading, mathematics, and science, as well as that of music, art, and social behaviors.

So why would the Regressive Republicans be against this? In a word, crime. That's right crime. Regressive Republicans feel that children that get an early start on education are more likely to grow up to be criminals. The claim is 'we are taking kids away from their mothers too soon'. They feel it is just a form of brainwashing impressionable young minds. This may be just a smoke screen meant to appeal to the Sarah Palin's of the world. The real reason seems to always boil down to money. Regressive Republicans don't like the idea of any secular education let alone public education. So it is easier to whittle away at the edges than cut popular things like High School Football or Basketball. This way they will kill two birds with one stone. Less kids in kindergarten means less public school teachers. Less public school teachers means less money going to unions, both which mostly support the Democratic party.

Last, knowledge based education. This one is so beyond stupid, it has made America the laughing stock of the developed world. This bears repeating:
We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.
By definition education is supposed to challenge your beliefs, otherwise you wouldn't be learning. Their claim is they are not talking about academics such as reading, writing and arithmetic, but  a relativistic process of questioning traditional moral values.

So if science says a light year is the distance light travels in one year, and that the galaxy LESS J0332 is 12.5 billion light years away, that means the universe is at least 12.5 billion years old. However your mother said '[televangelist] Paul and Jan Crouch preached the Big Bang is lie and the bible is right about the Universe only being 6,000 years old'. Or maybe the teacher told you 'Christopher Columbus didn't discover America because it was already inhabited by millions of Native Americans'. That is just so very wrong in their eyes.

How dare you question their nonsense? They don't want you thinking for yourself. They don't want you to think outside the box despite their claims to the opposite. They want you to be a little brain-washed automaton. If you question authority and think for yourself you might not believe in a Bronze-age mythology, and you might want to fact check their BS and instead of just blindly gulping it down.

Politicians React to ObamaCare Ruling

Synopsis: Republicans not happy, go boo hoo.

Synopsis: Democrats we Rock! Hell yes...

Synopsis: President Obama, suck it Romney! Stick your dog on that, fail!~...

Synopsis: Protesters, rable rable rable rable...

It's Alive! ObamaCare Lives

Think anybody can tell I am not wearing pants?

The United States Supreme Court has refused to over turn the Affordable Care Act called derisively 'ObamaCare' by regressives at a  5 to 4 margin!

Here is the PDF to the actual ruling:

From ScotusBlog:

Amy Howe: The money quote from the section on the mandate: Our precedent demonstrates that Congress had the power to impose the exaction in Section 5000A under the taxing power, and that Section 5000A need not be read to do more than impose a tax. This is sufficient to sustain it.

Amy Howe: On the Medicaid issue, a majority of the Court holds that the Medicaid expansion is constitutional but that it w/b unconstitutional for the federal government to withhold Medicaid funds for non-compliance with the expansion provisions.

Lyle: The key comment on salvaging the Medicaid expansion is this (from Roberts): "Nothing in our opinion precludes Congress from offering funds under the ACA to expand the availability of health care, and requiring that states accepting such funds comply with the conditions on their use. What Congress is not free to do is to penalize States that choose not to participate in that new program by taking away their existing Medicaid funding." (p. 55)
Amy Howe: The critical detail is that you cannot take away the existing Medicaid funds.

Political Cartoon of the Day: Rush vs Scalia

Grilling: Tastes Like Chicken? You Decide....

In the above video University of Missouri-Columbia professor of bioengineering Fu-Hung Hsieh uses a new process to convert soy protein and other vegetable products into a meat replacement. As the mash cools, vegetable fibers form, simulating the mouth-feel of chicken.

New York Times foodie Mark Bittman found the texture of this chicken replacement made this way remarkably similar to real boneless, skinless chicken breast. “The way it shreds is amazing, Bittman added . “When you … cut it up and combine it with, say, chopped tomato and lettuce and mayonnaise with some seasoning in it, and wrap it in a burrito, you won’t know the difference between that and chicken. I didn’t, at least, and this is the kind of thing I do for a living.”

A fresh and tasty meal made with Beyond Meat's faux chicken.
Will you try faux chicken?

Beyond Meat is currently selling this new type of chicken replacement or 'faux chicken' at Wholefoods. From the pictures you can't tell the difference. Price and taste will determine if this catches fire, though no word on this beyond Mark Bittman's review. According to food industry experts though, the market for meat  replacement is growing at 3  to 4 percent a year. However much of the current products on the market are more costly than actual chicken or burgers, and taste half as good. Here's hoping that this new process breaks that trend.

New Social Media App Saves You $$$ on Gas

Go green this summer vacation 2 ways or should I say waze. Social media mapping site has a free app that will guide you to cheaper gas. This saves you money two ways: 1., you don't waste gas driving around looking for cheaper gas 2., as a member you get a $.10/gallon discount at many gas stations.

Democratic Progress is in no way sponsored by, but we are glad to share this with you on the basis that it is a progressive technology that is good for the 99%. Waze works by adding social media  feedback layered on top of the regular GPS data. Normally there are several routes to your destination, but with waze you can get feedback from people that have already driven this route. Might be stuff like, 'This road sucks, always heavy traffic', or maybe 'Look out for that speed trap'. Think of it as a Yelp for traffic and directions.

Waze Version 3.2: Find cheap gas, and more great news for commuters!

Poll: Obama leads in Battleground States

Mitt Romney bragging about how many people he fired and how he hates poor people.
A Cayman Islands Bankers best friend.

According to a poll released Wednesday shows President Obama by a small margin beating Regressive Republican Mitt Romney in Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio. These 3 battleground states went Obama in 2008, but the question is will they go his way again this year?

The poll from Quinnipiac University shows:
Obama vs Romney in each of these key states - [no one has won the White House since 1960 without taking at least two of them]:

Florida: Obama edges Romney 45 - 41 percent;
Ohio: Obama over Romney 47 - 38 percent;
Pennsylvania: Obama tops Romney 45 - 39 percent.

President Obama has a winnable margin of victory over Regressive Republican Mitt Romney in Ohio and Pennsylvania and a smaller advantage in Florida. If he can keep those leads in all three of these key swing states through election day he would be virtually assured of re-election.

How surveys or polls are done matters greatly as to their actual accuracy, this is how Quinnipiac University Polling Institute did it:
From June 19 - 25, surveyed:

1,200 Florida voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent;
1,237 Ohio voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent;
1,252 Pennsylvania voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent.
Live interviewers called land lines and cell phones.

Bottom Line: Results may vary....

The last line is critical, younger voters tend to use cell phones while older people tend to be reached at land lines. In a survey if all your calls were to land lines your results would be skewed towards what older people think. If you use strictly cell phone numbers, then the opposite would be true.  If you call mostly urban markets, then that would likely get you more Black or Latino voters. If you choose to call mostly rural or suburban markets, then it would be skewed towards whites. Further if the markets you called were mainly wealthy areas that would likely skew it even further to the Republican side.

The man just keeps on giving, comically that is. I am actually sad the nominee is Romney and not Perry, that would have made for some true comic gold.

Pictures From America's Polluted Past.

Regressive Republicans are fond of picking on the EPA, saying it costs jobs. The House Republicans have outlined a jobs agenda that mainly consists of disemboweling federal regulations they don’t like, with a particular focus on rules designed to protect the public from environmental destruction. Regressive Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) released a memo to Republicans that targeted the 10 most so-called “job-destroying” regulations in the federal register. Translation, regulations that cost money to people like the Koch Brothers but help the rest of us.

We think it is worth looking back at why we have an EPA and pollution regulations. These are pictures of  Pittsburgh PA from when America actually had a booming steel industry (circa 1940's).

Bottom Line

Don't let regressives lie to you about the wonders of the free market. What they really mean is they want to be free to pollute your air and water. That isn't free market, it's theft of the commons.

Supreme Court has Refused to hear MT Case Challenging Citizens United

The Supreme Court has just refused to hear the Montana case challenging Citizens United. Instead, it has simply squashed it, using a tactic known as summary reversal.

We must amend the U.S. Constitution to overrule the Supreme Court’s“Citizens United” decision and make it clear that corporations do not have constitutional rights as if they were people.

Presidents Who Smoked Pot: Abe Lincoln

"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
From a letter written by Abe Lincoln to the head of the Hohner Hamonica company in Germany.

Here are a few other presidential quotes:

Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country.
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President

Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere.
- George Washington, U.S. President

We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption.
- John Adams, U.S. President

Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marihuana.

I inhaled frequently. That was the point.
- Barack Obama, U.S. President

The war on drugs has been an utter failure. We need to rethink and decriminalize our nation's marijuana laws. -Barack Obama, January 2004

Fox Says Obama looks like Frightened Child Next to Putin

Jon Stewart points out the massive re-write over at Fox News. While all the other networks picked up on the fairly obvious body language between President Obama and Russian President Putin at the G20 summit. Most noting that it didn't look like the two were seeing eye to eye on Syria. Fox however pulls one of out it's typical bag of tricks and claims Obama looks like a frightened child.

Fox News has a long history of doing this. Turning virtually any headline into an anti-Obama slam. The amount of misinformation is at such a epic level that studies show people who watch no news are better informed that those that watch Fox News. Take this article for example:

From the LA Times:
A coalition of immigrant and human rights groups Friday urged Congress to investigate the Border Patrol's use of deadly force against rock throwers along the U.S.-Mexico border, saying the frequency of such confrontations is disturbing and inhumane.

The request came three days after an agent in San Diego fatally shot a 40-year-old Tijuana man suspected of injuring an agent by throwing rocks and a nail-studded wooden board.

Lawmakers are asked to look into a policy that allows agents to shoot at rock throwers along the U.S.-Mexico border. The ACLU and others argue that the practice is inhumane.
The story relayed in a factual manner by actual journalists.

Now Fox's version....

Fox News distorts story about the Border Patrol using excessive force and killing people for minor crimes into a fairy tale about 'ACLU' calling for brutal assaults on Border Patrol Officers.
You would think this about a completely different story if you relied on Fox for your news.

Bottom Line

Misinformation? Check. Constant manipulation for political gain? Check. Just another day at Fox News. Unfair and Unbalanced as always. To those looking for actual reporting or insightful commentary, we would like to suggest networks like RT, BBC, PBS or Al Jazeera instead.

Obama's War on Pot: DEA Administrator Refuses to Admit Pot Not Harmful like Crack

From C-Span:

Drug Enforcement Administrator Michele Leonhart testifies on Capitol Hill Wednesday before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.

The purpose of this hearing is to conduct oversight of the DEA. Members may question Leonhart about the investigation in possible misconduct by DEA agents in Colombia, which came to light as a result of the Secret Service incident with prostitutes before the President’s visit to Cartagena. The DEA has permanent offices in Colombia.

Additionally, they will discuss "Operation Fast and Furious." While criticism surrounding the operation has focused on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, agents at DEA, FBI and ICE were also likely aware that guns were "walked" to Mexico.

Finally, the affects of the upcoming Mexican Presidential elections on the U.S. drug war is also a topic of interest.

Currently, the agency has nearly 5,000 special agents and a budget of $2.02 billion.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) will chair the hearing.

Now for the good part!

Reps. Jared Polis and Steve Cohen questioned DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart about the dangers of marijuana relative to other illegal drugs, such as heroin and methamphetamine. Ms. Leonhart refused at this point to answer the questions posed to her. She instead decided to answer every question with an answer straight from South Park's Mr. Mackey, 'Drugs are bad".

Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado:  'Is crack worse for a person than marijuana'?
DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart: 'I believe all illegal drugs are bad'.

Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado: 'Is methamphetamine worse for somebody’s health than marijuana? Is heroin worse for somebody’s health than marijuana?'
DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart: 'Again, all drugs'....

Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado: 'Yes, no, or I don’t know? If you don’t know this, you can look this up. As the chief administrator for the Drug Enforcement Agency, I’m asking a very straightforward question'.

DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart:
'Heroin is highly addictive, but the question you are asking is subjective. Some people become addicted marijuana and some people become addicted to methamphetamine'.
Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado: 'Would you agree that marijuana causes less harm to individuals than meth, crack, cocaine, and heroin'?

DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart: 'As a former police officer, as a 32-year DEA agent, I can tell you that I think marijuana is an insidious drug'.

This graph illistrates the massive increase in America's prison population when Ronal Reagan declared War on Drugs. Ironically at the same time the CIA and the Contra's were flooding America with Coke to finance Reagan's illegal War in Central America.
Graph shows the rise in prison population with the advent of Reagan's War on Drugs.

Nearly half of Democrats (48%) and independents (49%) now support the legalization of marijuana.
America's changing position on marijuana legalization.

Bottom Line

The question is why does the person given charge of America's War on [illegal] Drug Use not know the difference between Marijuana and Heroin or Crack? Is it that she won't admit to the stunning failure of Ronald Reagan's War, now Obama's on American Citizens or is she just truly incompetent? Medical marijuana initiatives have won by massive landslides in many states. Pew Research polls show the majority now favor not only medical marijuana, but also decriminalization or outright legalization.

Picture of the Day: Scorpius

Progressive Science

Deep in the Milky Way in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion) lies NGC 6357 , a region of space where new stars are being born in of chaotic clouds of gas and dust. The outer parts of this vast nebula have now been imaged by ESO’s Very Large Telescope [VLT], producing the best picture of this region taken so far.
The new picture shows a broad river of dust across the center that absorbs the light from more distant objects. To the right there is a small cluster of brilliant blue-white young stars that have formed from the gas. These are probably only a few million years old, very young by stellar standards. The intense ultraviolet radiation streaming out from these stars is hollowing out a cavity in the surrounding gas and dust and sculpting it in strange ways.
