Dirty Hippies or Dirty Lies?
Thanks to an insane and reckless new law privatizing public education in Louisiana, Bible-based curriculum can now indoctrinate young minds with religion, junk science and revisionist history all on the state taxpayers' dime. Take the example above about hippies from one new textbooks being used in the curriculum, it says:
They went to Canada or European countries to escape being drafted [read unpatriotic] into military service.
This is what is known as a logic fallacy, more precisely Cherry Picking. In total, some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early 70s to avoid serving in the war. Ninety percent went to Canada, where after some initial controversy they were eventually welcomed as immigrants. Still others hid inside the United States. For its part, the U.S. government continued to prosecute draft evaders after the Vietnam War ended. A total of 209,517 men were formally accused of violating draft laws, while government officials estimate another 360,000 were never formally accused.
Now for the Cherry Picking part, a good portion of the draft dodgers were conservatives like Rush Limbaugh. Rush got a deferment from going to Vietnam because of ingrown hairs on his butt, he claimed he couldn't sit for long periods. What does Rush do for a living these days? He sits on his fat ass as a radio loud mouth. Then there is Ted Nugent. Ted got out of going to Vietnam by literally shitting and pissing his pants for a month. That's right he shit and pissed his pants for a month and never changed them or cleaned up so the Army would think he was insane. Next there is Dick Cheney, who got 5 draft deferments for things like it would cause his family hardship because his wife was pregnant or he was in college for a very long time because he was a bad student. Former President George W Bush did serve, if you count being AWOL from the national guard for 2 years as serving. These are but a few examples that this propaganda would prefer our kids not know about.
The next line in the picture is equally laughable:
Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles, these youth became know as hippies.
Again this is slanted and biased Cherry Picking, here is what Wikipedia says about the issue:
The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world. The word 'hippie' came from hipster, which was initially used to describe beatniks who had moved into San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. The origins of the terms hip and hep are uncertain, though by the 1940s both had become part of African American jive slang and meant "sophisticated; currently fashionable; fully up-to-date". The Beats adopted the term hip, and early hippies inherited the language and countercultural values of the Beat Generation. Hippies created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and some used drugs such as cannabis, LSD, and magic mushrooms to explore altered states of consciousness.
Notice how the word derives from 'hipster', not 'draft dodger' or deviant as the book would infer. Yes they embraced pot and acid, but conservatives were hardly drug free and even fought efforts to combat smoking. The difference was hippies broke barriers and explored new ways of thinking and living, that hardly equates to immoral. Immorality is actually a subjective judgement and not a black and white standard set in stone as the conservatives would have our children believe. In times past it was considered perfectly moral to slaughter Indians, own slaves, sell your kids to factories, and beat your wife. None of these values were embraced by these new hippies, what they did embrace though was equality and the non-violence of Jesus. Jesus said to turn the other cheek, yet somehow these so-called Christians saw that as immoral.
Peace man, make love not war.
Mother Jones did an article that covers a number of the other crazy things these clowns want to teach to our kids. Beyond the standard nonsense about global warming and creationism being wrong because the bible says so it includes such gems as slave owners were actual pretty awesome guys.
A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.—United States History for Christian Schools, 2nd ed., Bob Jones University Press, 1991
A few? I am willing to bet 10 years of my life that not a single one of these idiots would put up with being a slave for 1 day let alone their entire lives. That is like saying many of the guards at Auschwitz were quite charming and jovial with the Jewish prisoners. No amount of slavery is acceptable. Slaves had no rights and no amount of sugar coating will change that fact. Here is an example of a Virgina Law from 1669 that sums it up pretty well:
An act about the casual killing of slaves....If any slaves resist his master (or other by his master's order correcting him) and by the extremity of the correction should chance to die, that his death shall not be attempted felony.
So another words, it's only murder if the victim is white. In the Caribbean, Dutch Guiana and Brazil, the slave death rate was so high and the birth rate so low that they could not sustain their population without importations from Africa. Rates of natural decrease ran as high as 5 percent a year. While the death rate of U.S. slaves was about the same as that of Jamaican slaves, but the fertility rate was more than 80 percent higher. So while U.S. slaves were treated somewhat better than their South American counterparts, they certainly weren't treated anywhere near the manner of white people.
Islamic Science before conservatives took over.
These are but a few of the things Bobby Jindal has put his stamp of approval on for the education of students in his state. If there ever was a reason to fear for the future of America, the conservative [regressive] war on education and science is it. If conservatives continue to have their way, America is doomed to repeat the lesson of the Islamic Golden Age. During this era (c.750 CE – c.1258 CE), the Islamic world lead in science and scholarly pursuits. Then a group of religious conservatives came to power who said "Hey everything you ever need to know is in this little book written by God". The result was that middle east is still in the science dark ages, if it were not for western inventions and technology they would still be getting around by donkey. We can't let this happen to America.
